As some of you know, I have been the long standing leader of the gaming guild “Order of Z” ( www.orderofz.com ).  We tried to form a chapter in the MMO/Virtual World Entropia Universe ( www.entropiauniverse.com ) several years ago and it was just not for most of our players.  Since I went back to Entropia, Order of Z was pretty much dead.  So, I decided to leave and find a society that I could be a part of.  I had no real desire to lead up a new society.

I found Entropia Asia, and met several good players and new friends during my stay in that society.  For several reasons, it was not a solid “fit” and I decided to break off.  After a few days of thought, I decided what the hell and I formed my own society ZOKU ( www.zoku.eu ).  Some of the members of Entropia Asia have come over to help me get it going.

I’ve been working hard on our website and setting some of the policies I feel are needed to run a society well within Entropia Universe.  Things are going smooth and we’re getting things going.

So, if you want to find us, we’re in Entropia Universe when the real world does not get in the way.  At least Angel and I are.  Dana has an avatar, but she’s been going well in Everquest II and she’s happy in there for now.  My character name is Zentro Zen Zatsu and Angel is Angel AngelGirl Zatsu.

We can be contacted through the www.zoku.eu site.

My Deepest Fear

TheJoe | Self Analysis | 1 Comment

I am watching this movie “Akeehla and the Bee” about a girl going to the National Spelling Bee. I heard this quote that hit home to me and I needed to blog it.

It goes:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us most. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and famous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? - Marianne Williamson

I have long known that I am capable of doing anything, as I believe anyone is as well.  Sometimes, I wonder why I am not as successful as I know I can be.  Don’t get me wrong, I live a comfortable existence and have many things that I am happy is in my life.  However, at times, I feel I am not doing things at my peak potential.  At times, I feel I am holding myself back.

I know it sounds odd, but I think this quote hit home for me.  I am afraid of success.  I am afraid of the responsibility that goes with it.  I need to get over it.

Sick and Lazy

TheJoe | General | 0 Comments

I really need to get blogging on a regular basis. :) I was laid out sick for most of September.

Anyways, September was for the most part an uneventful month. The big BIG big thing that has happened is that my son started school for the first time! Lots of anticipation and excitement for us. He took to it well, he’s having a lot of fun in school.

I’ve been outlining the next phase of what we’re doing with our web stuff and other sites. I will be working on two non-porn sites soon (Surprise Surprise). We’re taking the Happy Fornicator site offline for a bit while we re-group on what it’s purpose is.

On the Linux side of things I have been checking out Ubuntu 7.10 which is due out on th 18th of October. It’s looking interesting. I’ll be installing the release as soon as I get my hands on it. I think I will be re-doing the main home server yet again.

The plans for Costa Rica are still out there. We’ve also started looking at other opportunities in other countries. It’s time for us to get out of Las Vegas.

Entropia Universe is still occupying my free time. I am having a lot of fun with it and see some potential for residual income down the road.

Anyways, I just wanted to give a quick update.

Well, since I have been too lazy to blog, I have decided at least to try to do a weekly update on Sun/Mon and see if I can stick to it.

This past week, we have been prepping for Draylan’s first ever day in school.  He starts Kindergarten in about 4.5 hours.  WOW, time flies.  I remember when he was born.  Seems like yesterday.  He’s got his haircut (Mohawk of course), he chose some new shoes and an outfit.  He’s raring to go!  (I’ll try and post some pictures when I can)

On the Linux side of things, I am designing a new server for home.  I’ll post the specs when I get it all figured out.  I am getting ready to play with MediaTomb and see how that does as a DLNA server.  We’ve decided to move again soon, so we’re gonna postpone the LinuxMCE configs till we get in the new place.

Well, I’ve been preparing for two larger projects, one of which will be my first non-adult endeavor on the web.  This should be interesting, yet again, I will post more on this when we get a solid framework up.

The last several months, I have been so busy with getting things going, that I have not had time to do any gaming or anything along those lines.  As you know, I went back to Entropia Universe almost 2 weeks ago and I am playing when I can.  I have joined a great society, Entropia Asia, and I am working on getting a website set up for them.  When it is completed it will be at http://www.entropia-asia.com I hope to get it done in the next couple of weeks and I am gonna have Andrew (www.hoodyhoo.com) work on a couple logo designs and see how they like it.

Anyways, that’s it for now.   :)

I used to play Entropia Universe when it was called Project Entropia and I stopped playing about 2 years ago. I have logged in and out over the past 2 years. I have always felt that this was the direction online worlds and gaming should or is going.

For a while now, I have been waiting for the “next big game” and all of the MMO’s out there are basically the same. The only real difference to me is the depth (or lack of) that they provide. So far, I have been unimpressed by what I have seen.

I have decided to give Entropia Universe another go. It has a very unique system. It allows for exchange of in-game money to real money and vice versa. So you are not paying for a subscription to play. You are actually depositing into the game economy like a tourist when you play. Although, unlike most tourist, you can earn money while visiting. Think of it as visiting a country on both a work and pleasure visa. You can spend money (and you can spend a LOT) while visiting thereby enhancing the local economy, or you can enjoy the world and work in the world and make something out of it.

I think this time around, I am gonna stick to it a bit longer. The last time I played, I was in hardcore gaming mode. I put a couple grand into the game and got bored of it because I thought of it as just a game. This time around, when I play, I am not looking at it as just a game, I am looking at it as everything I do, every item I spend or allow to decay, that that’s my money going away, and I want it back! :)

Some of you know that I have been running a gaming guild called the Order of Z for quite some years. I had a bunch of my guild join me in Project Entropia but they soon got tired of it. This time logging in, I removed myself from the Order of Z society and I am looking to join Entropia Asia… Although, in my travels so far, I met a good group of guys at www.honest-entropians.com …. If it doesn’t work out with Entropia Asia, I may give Honest Entropians a go.

Cheers

Linux x64 and VMWare

TheJoe | Linux, VMWare | 0 Comments

I have been using either Debian or Ubuntu server to run my home server. (I’ll be blogging the final configuration when I get it done)

I kept getting the following error:

Unable to change virtual machine power state: Failed to connect...

It was a fairly simple fix, I just want to blog it before I forget :D

You just need to install the ia32-libs:

apt-get install ia32-libs

And voila! it works!

Just playing around with DSL Reports last night. I got some good download speeds considering I am only supposed to have 5 to 7 megabit download.

For years, one of my pet projects has been to create a low cost (below $20K) central solution to store and serve my massive media collection. I have thousands of DVD’s, Video, Audio, Pictures, etc. ( Click to see about 2/3 of my DVD collection )

I also want a central location to serve up my TV/Satellite feeds etc. I have played with probably every possible combination of OS, Hardware, Embedded, Software, etc that I could get my hands on.

Lately, you all know that I have been on a Linux kick (yet again). I was beginning to play with MythTV but that would just solve the issue of serving the media to MythTV frontends. I was playing with several DLNA servers but the issues I ran into with those was one of transcoding, most linux DLNA servers don’t transcode. (transcoding is taking media of one type, say WMV and serving it up another type, say MP4, so your device can play it properly) So for now, I kinda put DLNA on the back burner. Read the complete Post.

I got the moblin/hildon desktop running in a Xephyr window on a Gutsy Tribe 3 desktop.  It has promise, but in this Tribe 3 phase, it’s not ready for prime time.

I downloaded Tribe 4 this morning and will play with it over the next few days.  We’ll see how it goes.

Well, I am fascinated by the stuff that’s coming down the pipeline. I have been playing with the moblin stuff ( www.moblin.org ). I really think that this is the direction mobile devices should be going.

Now, the extent of my knowledge in the Unix/Linux world is mostly command line based and server knowledge. I am fairly new to display managers and how they work. I downloaded a base gutsy distribution to play with the Ubuntu Mobile stuff and am anxious to play with this interface.

I have gotten the image creator to work and have seen the mobile-ubuntu stuff working in gutsy but in a window. I would really like to put it as the native or default desktop on my UX280P. From what I have read through my google’s, this is a possibility.

I will continue my search and once I learn how it is done, I will post a ‘How I did it’ here.

The search begins!

PS If any of you know if there is a Howto out there already, let me know.
